A good standard of hotel with friendly and helpful staff. More signs to find your way about the hotel would have been more helpful.

Hotel looks very run down, so does the rooms, the windows were nailed shut, beds were rock hard, staff were ok, the food tasted really bad, the plates were dirty, the cups, glasses were also dirty.

We arrived on Sunday 6, May about 4.30pm. The desk clerk handed us the key to our room number 133. I had to speak first, and give our names, I tried to engage in conversation with a male person sitting at the desk, no response. The room was small with the bed pushed against the wall on one side, one window did not close properly, some wall paper was coming off the wall in the bathroom. We had requested a room with a sea view but no mention of one from the clerk. We visit one of my brothers, who lives on Norcliffe Road next to the Norbreck, and have done for many years after first attending my Royal Navy reunion which we have held at the Norbreck, HMS Ceylon, but I must say that there we have no intention of staying there again. Some of the bar staff could use some help also. The entertainment was really good.

From my recollection of the hotel web site I thought a pleasant experience was in store. I requested a non smoking room. I was not allocated same and was not impressed when I arrived in an area of the hotel which clearly had odour problems. Upon approaching reception staff the attitude was initially less than helpful; i.e. there was no rush to resolve the situation only excuses relating to there was no other rooms available at my room rate. Eventually, I was allocated another room with a sea view in another part of the hotel which did not suffer the same odour problem and which met my requirements. Unfortunately there then began a saga of travelling to and from reception as the key would not work. Eventually, I was moved to another room only to find I had the same problem with the key. When this was resolved I found a lack of hot water from the taps. Accepting my fate and that I had made a mistake in booking with this hotel, I went to bed.

This was our second visit this year and we were a little disapointed with our room on the second visit compared to the first room we had. The same tariff applied although the room hadn't been refurbished and was obviously a smoking room. The hotel is brilliant food and staff excellent will use again.

I was very disapointed with the hotel. My room was in the older part of the hotel, which was noisy, very cold and badly in need of redecoration. Breakfast was served in the large conservatory, which was freezing with wind blasting through it.
