Things to do

Seattle is an eccentric and fascinating city – one of its unique sights is the Market Theater Gum Wall, in Post Alley at Pike Place Market. This is a wall covered with chewing gum, in some places a few inches thick. The tradition of sticking gum to the wall is thought to have begun in 1993.

Pike Place Market is Seattle’s original farmers’ market, established in 1907. Fresh produce, handmade jewelry and gifts, flowers and fashion from local designers can be found here. Around the corner from the market is the first Starbucks. 

No trip to Seattle would be complete without a journey to the top of the Space Needle. From a height of 520 feet, sightseers can admire breathtaking 360-degree views of the city.

Parks

Seattle has dozens of parks and green spaces to explore, perfect for people-watching or enjoying a tranquil break from the urban bustle. The Hiram M Chittenden Locks in Ballard are worth seeing for the Pacific Northwest salmon jumping the fish ladders. Other fun activities for water lovers include canoeing at the UW Waterfront Activities Center and paddling on the lake at the arboretum.

Discovery Park, the largest in Seattle, is popular for kite flying and hiking. There are numerous scenic trails through the park, including one along the beach. Those looking for a less strenuous walking route can take a stroll at the Waterfront with gorgeous views of the city.

The Woodland Park Zoo is another impressive attraction on offer in Seattle – visitors are free to roam the spacious habitats for the animals.

Drinking and Eating

As the home of Starbucks, it is not surprising that Seattle is a haven for coffee connoisseurs. Seattle’s Best Coffee and Tully’s are other chains originating here which have taken the United States by storm. There are also some thriving independent venues – the Aster Coffee Lounge and Arabica Lounge on Capitol Hill are two local favorites.

Seattle has long been a hub for beer enthusiasts with its abundance of microbreweries. One of the oldest in the city is the Elysian Brewing Company; another popular spot is the Black Raven Brewing Company which produces award-winning beers like Trickster IPA and Totem Northwest Pale.

In terms of dining, Pioneer Square is the up-and-coming place to be, featuring restaurants like Il Corvo which serves fantastic pasta meals for less than $10 a bowl. Alternatively, authentic Pacific Northwest cuisine can be sampled from the eateries at Pike Place Market.
