Things to do in America’s Walking City

A metropolis famed for its high number of pedestrian commuters, Boston is a destination that is perfect for exploring on foot, and it benefits from an excellent range of urban parks. One of the most popular is the Boston Common at the starting point of the Freedom Trail. It’s the oldest park in the country, and is the anchor point for the Emerald Necklace – a system of connected parks winding their way through the city’s districts.

For more outdoor fun, visitors can catch a baseball game at Fenway Park. It’s been the home of the Boston Red Sox for over a century, and is officially the oldest Major League stadium still in use. Also worth checking out is The Boston Garden - renting a swan boat is a must here, and the elaborate monuments and fountains scattered around the area are impressive sights. Close to Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is the World Trade Center, as well as other tourist attractions like the Fort Point Arts Community Gallery.

There’s no shortage of museums in this city, including the Boston Children’s Museum, the Boston Fire Museum and the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museums. The BSA Space is an innovative architecture venue that exhibits contemporary design in a classic Bostonian structure while The Museum of Fine Arts displays everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts to French impressionist paintings. The Institute of Contemporary Art is where modern art lovers head to, and the French Cultural Centre serves as a little slice of Gallic charm smack-dab in the middle of Boston.

Food and Shopping in the City on a Hill

Every traveler should spend a few hours in Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which dates back to 1742 and features live music and street theatre along with an array of delectable cuisine. For after-game refreshment, there are a number of great little pubs and bars near Fenway Park, like Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar and Jillian’s of Boston, which serves classic American favorites between games of pool and bowling. Near Boston Garden is Halftime Pizza, a favorite among locals.

For serious shoppers, Copley Place is the place to be. This upscale shopping mall is located in the Back Bay of Boston, and has a little bit of something for everyone; high-end designers such as Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior feature alongside big American brands, like The Gap. Additionally, Downtown Crossing is a district that is home to large department stores and street vendors, creating an appealing market atmosphere.

Off the Beaten Track

One of Boston’s coolest features is the sheer diversity evident in its neighborhoods. If time permits, it’s worth exploring places like Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, East Boston and South Boston, each of which has its own unique quirks and charms.
