Exploring the Temples

Bangkok is full of temples – Wat Yan Nawa is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Its unique chedi and viharn, built later during the rule of King Rama III, are in the shape of an ancient Chinese ship and make for a stunning photo opportunity.

Near Wat Yan Nawa is Wat Arun, one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. Also called the ‘Temple of Dawn’, it sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and has exquisite towers covered in Chinese ceramics. The characteristic temple spires were constructed in the 19th Century while King Rama II was in power.

Adjacent to the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, which houses the biggest reclining Buddha statue in Thailand. The statue is covered in gold and its feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Other Things to Do

While in Bangkok, visitors must be sure to sample some of the delectable local cuisine. The food from street vendors is extremely cheap and offers a huge variety. Traditional Thai dishes make use of fresh herbs, seafood, meats, salads, spicy soup and green curry. To try out grilled meats and sticky rice, the northeast corner of Bangkok – home to restaurants like Isaan Rot Det – is the place to go.

Classical Thai dance and drama, where sacred rites are displayed through performances, are well worth seeing. Khon is a highly complicated form of masked dance that can be seen in Sala Chalermkrung. There is also Lakhon drama – melodramatic shows routinely performed by an all-male cast.

Those looking for a relaxing beach break should head to Hua Hin; alternatively, Ko Samet is a trendy spot with a party vibe. This is a small islet in the Rayong province with lush forests framing the emerald ocean.

A different kind of relaxing experience can be found at a holistic center like the Institute of Thai Traditional Medicine. There are also several places where one can learn to meditate, such as Wat Mahathat.

Nightlife

Bangkok has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the best nightlife destinations in the world. Wild, rowdy areas like Patpong, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy provide legendary entertainment for locals and travelers alike. However, there are also plenty of more laid-back options, including clubs with live music, venues hosting jazz bands, stylish martini bars and excellent restaurants.

One fun thing to check out is one of the gentleman’s clubs, which range from cigar lounges to absinthe bars in neon-lit caves. It’s a unique experience not to be missed.
