Old Town

The Old Town in the center of Geneva features a charming collection of narrow cobbled streets and stunning architecture. Many top sights can be found here, including St Peter’s Cathedral, Geneva City Hall, the International Museum of the Reformation and the Maison Tavel – a medieval house that is the oldest private residence in the city. The Barbier-Mueller Museum is well worth a visit for its impressive collection of more than 4,000 pieces of tribal art and artefacts. Also not to be missed is the English Garden where the unique Flower Clock, consisting of an incredible 6,500 flowers and plants, can be found.

In the heart of the Old Town, the Place du Bourg-de-Four is Geneva’s oldest square and a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. This is an excellent spot to relax with a cup of coffee and partake in some people-watching. The tree-lined Bastions Park is home to the Reformation Wall featuring sculptures of prominent figures involved in this movement, eye-catchingly built into the old city walls.

General Sightseeing

Probably the best-known landmark in the city is the Jet d'Eau, one of the largest fountains in the world which stands out brilliantly on the iconic Lake Geneva. Shooting gallons of water majestically upwards, a staggering 140 meters into the air, this attraction is impossible to miss and an essential stop on any itinerary.

The Palais des Nations, the European headquarters for the United Nations, is an architectural treasure and a fascinating sight where guided tours are available. For the ultimate cultural indulgence, visitors should head to the opera at Grand Théâtre de Genève – an exquisite, opulent building with superb acoustics.

Eating, Drinking and Shopping

After working up an appetite wandering around the gorgeous parks and taking in numerous sights, there are many restaurants to choose from offering a wide array of international cuisine. There is something for everyone, from fine dining to quick bites and everything in between.

Geneva boasts Michelin-starred restaurants alongside inviting bistros serving the best local produce. For a delicious lunch, why not sample some pretzels from the local bakeries? After dark, the Old Town supplies abundant nightlife with plenty of pubs and clubs.

There are ample shopping opportunities in this city, including luxury boutiques as well as independent gems. The Plaine de Plainpalais hosts a delightful flea market twice a week where antiques and unique items can be found.
