Many of the islands are uninhabited, but Pulau Langkawi caters for tourists with an array of hotels, exquisite scenery and duty-free shopping. Langkawi is the first and only UNESCO-endorsed Geopark in South East Asia owing to its natural beauty and ecological significance; it creates a striking impression with a rich landscape of mountains, beaches and thick tropical rainforest. Beaches and Outdoor Attractions Many of the hotels and resorts are clustered around Pantai Cenang Beach on the south-western tip of the island. This gorgeous stretch of soft, chalk-white sand is the best known and most popular of Langkawi’s beaches, and it is lined with numerous bars and restaurants. For a stark contrast, visitors can head to Pantai Pasir Hitam, commonly known as the Black Sand Beach, where the sand is darkened by mineral deposits. A quieter beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas, is Pantai Kok in the west. Within walking distance of here is Eagle Square, so named for its large enigmatic eagle sculpture. Another worthwhile attraction nearby is the fascinating and beautiful folklore-themed Lagenda Park. Tanjung Rhu, on the northernmost tip of the island, is home to sandy beaches, limestone crags and caves, and luxury resorts such as Four Seasons. Stopping by at Telaga Harbour, visiting the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls and taking a cable car to the peak of Mount Machincang are all itinerary essentials. Also in this area is Pulau Payar Marine Park, a top spot for swimming, diving and snorkeling. It is even possible to swim with baby sharks. Cultural Sights Langkawi is full of historic landmarks and areas of archaeological importance. At the village of Mawat one can see Mahsuri’s Tomb, the crypt of a legendary princess. The Galeria Perdana displays gifts, souvenirs and awards belonging to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad. Art lovers must be sure to visit the galleries and workshops at the Atma Alam Batik Art Village where the best local artists exhibit and sell their works. Lush paddy fields are a prominent feature in the Langkawi landscape and it is possible to learn about the history of rice cultivation at the Rice Museum. Shopping and Dining Duty-free shopping makes indulging in retail therapy here especially enjoyable. Many upscale shops offering perfume, liquor, clothing, chocolate and more can be found in the Kuah area near Eagle Square. The Jetty Point Duty Free Complex houses various stores along with cafés, fast-food venues and bakeries, while the Oriental Village is a retail paradise at the foot of Mount Machincang, right next to the cable car station, with a mixture of adventure stores, galleries and spas. Traditional Malaysian handicrafts are available at Langkawi Craft Complex. Planning a trip to Langkawi? Take a look at our accommodation options for this stunning destination.
