Tel Aviv, Israel’s ancient port city on the Mediterranean coast, is a vibrant metropolis with plenty to offer. With a highly cosmopolitan character, it is commonly considered the most liberated city in the Middle East.

Historical Significance

One can’t learn about all of Israel’s fascinating past in a single visit, but seeing some of Tel Aviv’s most prominent historical venues is essential. The exploration can begin at Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, one of the biggest museums in the world showcasing the history of the Jewish People. The exhibits are thorough and engaging, providing information from as early as 2,500 years ago.

Another significant historical landmark, located in Rabin Square near Beit Hatfutsot, is the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial. Created by Yael Ben-Artzi, this work of art is dedicated to the assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was an important political leader advocating peace. The sculpture of 16 basalt rocks signifies his influence and contributions to peace processes.

The Eretz Israel Museum, or the Museum of the Land of Israel, is a crucial stop near Rabin Memorial. This is predominately an archaeology museum which focuses on various aspects of Israeli history.

Things to Do

Aside from history and culture, Tel Aviv has ample opportunities for having some fun. Visitors can take a stroll down Rothschild Boulevard, lined with Bauhaus buildings, restaurants and cafes. A huge range of shopping options can be found at Dizengoff Centre, which holds a delightful food market every Thursday and Friday. Other markets worth checking out are the Carmel Market, the Flea Market and the Creative Artists Fair.

Temperatures soar in Tel Aviv, which boasts some of the world’s most stunning public beaches where lifeguards are on duty for swimmers’ peace of mind. On Friday afternoons, the sands become crowded with beach-goers, Brazilian drums and barbecues.

A final must-see for tourists is the panoramic vista of the city which can be viewed from the observation deck of Azrieli Center, 200 meters above central Tel Aviv. Going there at night is especially breathtaking.

Nightlife

Often called ‘the city that never sleeps’, Tel Aviv has an incredibly busy and diverse nightlife, with a vast array of pubs, bars and clubs. One of the districts best known for its thriving party scene is the Tel Aviv port, home to venues like TLV Club, UpTown, Erlich and Seabreeze.

Another popular area for nightlife is the promenade (Tayalet), which stretches along the coast from the seaport in the north to Jaffa in the south. Chic bars like Friends, Bergman and Rosa can be found on Dizengoff and Ben Yehuda Streets.
