Unlike some of the other tourist hotspots in the province, Nice is an intriguing blend of cultures, ages and styles, making it an ideal destination for holidaymakers of every ilk. Discovering the City on Foot A brilliant starting point for explorations is Place Masséna, the main city square. This gorgeous little plaza is on the southern end of Avenue Jean Mérdecin, next to Galeries Lafayette, a famous French shopping center. The square is an excellent place to grab a coffee, sit back and let the world drift past. The ultra-refined Opera de Nice is also near Place Masséna. The favored destination for people-watching in Nice is the Promenade des Anglais, or ‘La Prom’. Right on the Mediterranean, this ocean-side avenue is where locals, in their eclectic splendor, like to hang out. On the weekends, La Prom gets pleasantly crowded with bicyclists, skateboarders and in-line skaters, as well as walkers and runners. Nightlife Nice attracts a young crowd, due in no small part to the vibrant nightlife scene. La Prom has many great pubs and clubs, while the Vieux Nice and Masséna areas offer a little something for everyone: jazz, rock, techno, electronica, live music and more. Ma Nolan’s in Vieux Nice is a classic Irish pub, with live music every night, tasty food and sporting events shown on four TV screens. There’s also Thor Pub, a Scandinavian/Irish Pub with two floors, a large terrace and excellent drink specials. For something a little bit more authentic, there are plenty of charismatic French venues, such as La Civette du Cours, which revel in a classically cool Gallic style. Get Outdoors More than just a cosmopolitan city, Nice is surrounded by some of the best landscapes in the French Riviera. Some of the most impressive vantage points, with panoramic vistas of the metropolis and the mountains, can be found up Mont Boron, or at the old Fort. Plus, if he’s at home, Sir Elton John can be seen enjoying the splendid garden of his villa here! It is worth taking a quick trip to Eze, a small village just outside Nice. It’s situated on a small mountain, and visitors can walk the Path of Nietzsche (named for the philosopher) to navigate it. There are several hiking trails here - some double the height of Eze and offering mind-blowing views of this spectacular region. Ready to explore Nice?
