The historic walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is brimming with colorful colonial architecture, charming cobbled streets and bougainvillea-covered balconies, not to mention an array of beautiful beaches as well as heavenly islands just off the coast. History and Culture Cartagena was founded by Spanish settlers in the 16th Century and was an important location during the Inquisition. Remnants of this era can be seen everywhere, from the city walls, old churches and monasteries, to the Clock Tower and Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. An essential item for the itinerary is a walk around the walls, both during the day and at night. The Plaza de Bolivar, in the center of town, is surrounded by a number of fascinating landmarks, including the Palace of the Inquisition, the Gold Museum and the Cathedral of Cartagena. The city’s vibrant and growing art scene can be appreciated by perusing its various galleries, such as Art Cartagena, NH Galeria and the Museum of Modern Art. To get an insight into local life and see the city’s impressive street art, it is well worth taking a tour around Getsemani. Known as the cultural quarter of the city, this barrio has a cool bohemian vibe and is home to many artists’ workshops. Eating, Shopping and Entertainment Cartagena’s plazas provide ample opportunity for dining and indulging in retail therapy. Local artisans sell handmade jewelry and handbags at the Plaza Santo Domingo in the afternoon. This is a lovely square to grab a cup of coffee and partake in some people-watching; it features a sculpture of a woman by well-known Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The Church of Santa Domingo, the oldest church in Cartagena, is located here. Colombian handicrafts and souvenirs can be found at the shops of Las Bovedas, a converted prison building. Food outlets, stores, a cinema and a casino are conveniently available under one roof at the Caribe Plaza complex. For a sunset drink on top of the city walls with breathtaking views, Cafe del Mar is an unbeatable venue. As darkness falls, Cartagena’s streets and squares are filled with music and dancing – the perfect excuse for a salsa under the stars. Beaches and Islands While the historic aspect of Cartagena gets much attention, the region’s natural beauty is impossible to miss. Outside the city walls, there are several stunning beaches to explore. The main tourist areas and hotels are clustered around Bocagrande Beach and Castillo Grande Beach, but taking a boat out to some of the nearby islands makes for a fantastic day trip. The Rosario Islands, about 40 minutes away, provide idyllic settings for hiking, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Planning a trip to Cartagena?
