Known for its distinctive crescent-shaped beach, this idyllic destination is home to many luxury resorts. Seaside Activities Spending time on the sand or in the sea is bound to be an integral part of a vacation to a Caribbean island with one of the world’s best beaches. There is no room for boredom with the vast range of activities available here – sunbathing, swimming, beach volleyball, jet skiing and paddle boarding. Those interested in seeing colorful marine life can take a snorkeling or scuba diving trip to Cemetery Beach and Reef, or venture to some of the mysterious shipwreck sites just off the island. Another popular snorkeling spot is Stingray City where it is possible to get close to these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Situated nearby in George Town, the Cayman Islands’ capital, is the Cayman Turtle Farm, a 23-acre marine park which is home to more than 11,000 green sea turtles. Visitors can swim and snorkel with sea creatures in the expansive salt water lagoon and watch tropical birds in the free-flight aviary. Also on the premises are souvenir shops and a restaurant. Cultural Sights For a dose of local culture, sightseers can learn about Caymanian heritage through the impressive art works on display at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. Located off the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, adjacent to Seven Mile Beach, this venue houses collections and exhibits reflecting the islands’ rich history and vibrant creativity. Also well worth a visit is the Pedro St James, formerly called ‘Pedro’s Castle’. The oldest stone building in the Cayman Islands, this restored 18th Century house is set amid picturesque waterfront gardens full of palm trees and tropical plants. This structure has a fascinating past as it has been used for numerous purposes over the years – it has been a court house, a jail, a government building and a restaurant. The Pedro Theatre on the premises puts on a 3D multi-sensory presentation that provides insight into what life was like for the early settlers. Shopping and Eating Those seeking some retail therapy can head to the Governors Square Mall across from Seven Mile Beach, which houses many shops along with a selection of eateries. There are also plenty of stores, restaurants and bars in the vicinity of the beach. Alternatively, a large number of venues can be found in George Town just a short distance away.
