From the distinctive peaks of Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado, from where the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue magnificently overlooks the city, to sun-drenched beaches, samba bars and caipirinha cocktails, Rio always manages to impress. Copacabana The most popular tourist area is undoubtedly Copacabana; just saying the word immediately brings a certain song to mind. This is where one of the world’s most well-known beaches can be found, a four-kilometer stretch of sand where less is certainly more; Brazilian bikinis are tremendously tiny. Those who feel a bit overdressed can easily pick up something more ‘Rio’ in the surrounding swimwear shops. After soaking up the sun, partaking in people-watching and enjoying the generally energetic atmosphere, holidaymakers can grab a fresh coconut drink - the perfect thirst quencher. This beach is busy throughout the year, and besides swimming and sunbathing, families and groups of friends can be seen playing volleyball and football. This is also where up to three million pilgrims gathered to watch the new Pope perform Mass in 2013. Ipanema and Leblon Located adjacent to Copacabana in the South Zone is the affluent area of Ipanema. Another place in Rio that has been featured in a famous song, this is an upmarket neighborhood characterised by luxurious apartments and stylish high-end boutiques. Ipanema has another dazzlingly attractive beach, shadowed by the majestic ‘Two Brothers’ mountains to the west. Rua Visconde de Piraja is the place to go for shopping, while restaurants, bars and nightclubs are on offer in Rua Paul Redfern. Culture vultures head to the Galeria de Arte Ipanema – one of the oldest and most celebrated art galleries in Brazil. There are numerous quality eateries available for indulging in Brazilian favourites, such as feijoada, a black bean and meat stew served with rice. Situated a short distance away from Ipanema is Leblon, the city’s most affluent area. This is the home of Rio’s rich and famous and massive mansions can be found in the exclusive Jardim Pernambuco; although this area is largely residential, there are lavish malls here including Shopping Leblon. Barra da Tijuca Located in the West Zone of Rio, Barra da Tijuca is a well-developed district with an Americanized vibe, featuring plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. At just 30 years old, this is the youngest neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. The most striking element is the 17km-long white sandy beach that lays claim to massive waves, making it popular with surfers. Many surf schools can be found here and other water sports like kite surfing and wind surfing are enjoyed as well. The Barra Shopping Mall, the largest retail outlet in Rio and one of the biggest in Brazil, is situated here. Are you planning a visit to Rio de Janeiro?
