Classical music, rich history and beautiful baroque buildings are just a few of Vienna’s many charms. Austria’s impressive capital, the birthplace of music maestro Mozart, is regarded as one of the grandest cities in the world and it is not difficult to see why. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing and historically fascinating, it is also full of creative energy and contemporary appeal. 

Ringstrasse

Surrounding a large circular area where the old city wall once stood is the Ringstrasse, a historic hub containing some of Vienna’s architectural gems, museums, picturesque parks and bustling public squares. This area includes the breathtaking Burgtheater, known as ‘The Burg’, which is home to the national theater and holds all-German performances. Both the exterior and the interior are designed in a Renaissance-inspired style, with a façade featuring sculptures dedicated to creative giants like Shakespeare, Goethe and Moliere. World-renowned artists Franz Matsch and brothers Ernst and Gustav Klimt painted the ornate ceilings above the staircases.

More culture can be found at the 19th Century Vienna State Opera, the Museum of Fine Arts and the neo-gothic Vienna Town Hall. The Austrian Parliament Building is one of the largest structures in the city and has a majestic presence with classical Greek architecture. The Viennese City Park (Stadtpark) provides 28 acres of stunning green space; it is a popular place to watch waltz concerts or to admire the numerous statues scattered around the grounds.

Museumsquartier

The place to be for the city’s youngsters and cool crowd is the Museumsquartier – a culture complex close to the Imperial Palace where there are many museums and galleries, along with an abundance of restaurants, cafés and bars. The Leopold Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the contemporary art gallery Kunsthalle Wien can be found here. An exciting creative initiative called Quartier 21 provides spaces for artists and cultural projects. Contemporary Enzi outdoor furniture has become a notable trademark of this artsy area, where people go to read, relax or socialize.

Eating and Shopping

From the fresh produce markets to the cafés and restaurants lining the quayside of the Danube Canal, there are plenty of venues to indulge in gourmet cuisine or grab a quick bite to eat. Vienna has a thriving coffee house scene; alternatively, an excellent way to sample local food and wine is to visit one of the family-run taverns known as Heurigers.

For retail therapy, the place to go is Mariahilferstrasse. This bustling street, situated between Vienna’s Sixth and Seventh Districts, is home to well-known international brands, whereas delving down the adjacent side streets reveals a unique collection of trendy fashion and design outlets.
