Sydney, Australia

Sydney is known for dazzling beaches, iconic architecture and a cosmopolitan character. Located in New South Wales on the south east coast of Australia, this impressive city boasts some magnificent landmarks that are among the most recognized sights in the world.

Parks

There is no shortage of green spaces to explore in Sydney, such as Hyde Park (named after the famous London park), and the Chinese Garden of Friendship, which reflects Australia’s ties with China.

For some spectacular views, visitors should follow the waterfront trail in the Royal Botanical Gardens. A popular running route, this pathway is bordered by exquisite landscaped lushness on one side and open space overlooking the beautiful harbor on the other. Both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House can be spotted from here, along with the distinctive skyscraper-filled skyline of the Central Business District.

General Sightseeing

The trail through the Royal Botanical Gardens ends at the opera house, providing the perfect opportunity to take a tour. Alternatively, one can return in the evening to enjoy a show and see this remarkable structure stunningly lit up at night.

More classic stops to put on the itinerary are Taronga Zoo, the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium in Darling Harbour and the Tower Eye Observation Deck. A tour of the harbor is another essential activity for sightseers; those who are not averse to heights can get an adrenalin rush completing the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb.

The most famous of Sydney’s beaches is undoubtedly Bondi – a name which immediately brings to mind surfing, pure blue waters and a golden strip of sand. Catching a ferry over to Manly is well worth it for a day out on the delightful beach there. Other noteworthy beaches include Coogee, Bronte, Tamarama, Palm and Whale.

Those interested in history can take stroll around Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, The Rocks, take a guided tour of the 19th Century Government House or visit the Australian National Maritime Museum. Art lovers should check out the Museum of Contemporary Art as well as the aboriginal works on display at the Hogarth Galleries in Paddington.

Shopping and Eating

Sydney provides abundant opportunities for indulging in retail therapy and sampling gourmet cuisine. Westfield Sydney is a modern mall housing numerous shops alongside fine restaurants and a food court, whereas the Queen Victoria Building is a Victorian gem featuring opulent décor and luxurious outlets spread over five floors. The Strand Arcade is the place to go for designer fashion and coffee shops.

Every Saturday shoppers have the chance to wander around the historic Paddington Market – affectionately known as ‘Paddy’s Market’ – where fresh produce, crafts, clothing and souvenirs are on sale.

The Paddington district is also famed for its selection of cafés and restaurants. Fine dining venues and chic upscale bars can be found in Darling Harbour; another popular option is to sample fish and chips at Watsons Bay.
