I stayed there for business purposes and had never been there before, so I was skeptical about staying in a downtown hotel in Newark. However, it was more than I could have hoped for, especially the nice lobby, staff, and room. There is a restaurant and bar on site which was very nice as I arrived on a Sunday evening, tired and hungry.
This place was so nice I may go back for a visit and tour some of the sights nearby.
The only complaint I have is that that breakfast was not a 10 -- probably more like a 5, but that can easily be improved.

The Mertopolitan was within easy walking distance from the Midland Theater, where we attended an event. The hotel staff was competent and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable.
The alarm clock was set to the wrong time(and could not be set) but one word to the staff resolved this problem.
The heater/cooling unit worked well but was louder than desireable at night when it was working. We turned it off when we went to sleep and the room temperature stayed comfortable.
There was no bar soap in the bathroom, but we decided that the container with the liquid cleansing solution was meant to be used in place of solid bar soap. Not a problem, just an observation.
