With stunning bay scenery, sandy beaches and historical sites, there is something for the whole family here. Things to See One of the most famous landmarks in Coronado is the Hotel del Coronado. Considered one of the most beautiful beach resorts in the United States, it’s easy to spot with its red turrets and Victorian architecture. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Near the Hotel del Coronado is the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, another striking architectural design. This award-winning bridge makes a distinctive curve sweeping across San Diego Bay, connecting Coronado to San Diego city. Taking a drive along it affords some spectacular views over the surrounding region. For something cultural, visitors can head to the Coronado Museum of History and Art, a small museum dedicated to preserving local art, history, and architecture. A walking tour of the city also leaves from here and stops by some fascinating historical sites, such as the house where Frank Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz. Beaches The bay area is home to magnificent beaches, and staying in Coronado gives one direct access to all of them. San Diego’s South Bay is one of the most popular, with a seven-mile stretch of sand ideal for swimming, surfing, boating, water-skiing, volleyball, camping, fishing and more. Many locals favor Silver Strand State Beach, which features an overnight RV camping area, rest rooms, shower facilities and picnic areas. It gets its name for the silvery oyster shells found along the dunes – shell collecting is a fun pastime here. Coronado Cays Park is near Silver Strand State Beach and has wide, tranquil beaches. This is a great alternative to the busier areas, especially for an enjoyable outing with the family. Eat and Drink As a major resort town, Coronado has plenty of options for dining, suitable for all budgets. A local favorite is McP’s Irish Pub & Grill – established by a former Navy SEAL who wanted a place for military personnel to hang out, it is now open to all. Patrons love to relax on the patio listening to the live music which plays every night of the week. For brunch with a view, Bay Beach Café is a fantastic casual venue in the Ferry Landing Marketplace. In the evenings, one can watch the sunset while chowing down on sandwiches, salads, tasty burgers, fresh seafood or California-style dishes. Beer lovers must be sure to stop by the Coronado Brewing Company. This is a small brewpub with a varied menu – the Mermaid’s Red and Hoppy Daze are particularly delicious.
