Gorgeous beaches are never far away in Port of Spain, but the most popular has to be Maracas Bay. Cultural Sights

While lapping up the wonderful weather is understandably an attractive pastime, there are plenty of cultural sites in the area that provide a worthwhile break from the beach. The National Museum and Art Gallery is a great place to start. More than 10,000 exhibits are displayed over several galleries at this venue, each exploring different elements of the city’s natural and human history, including art collections. Venturing up to Fort George, a garrison established by British colonialists in the early 19th century, is advised for the incredible panoramic views as well as the interesting slice of heritage perspective. A program of theatre, music, dance and performing arts can be experienced at the Queen’s Hall theater.

The Brian Lara Promenade is a popular spot in the downtown area, brimming with sights and social ambience. Named after the well-known West Indies cricket player, this street runs the width of the city and features street vendors and entertainment. Also, visitors should keep an eye out for historical highlights such as the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception; situated on the eastern end of the prom, this is one of the oldest catholic churches in Port of Spain. Tranquil sightseeing options include the Botanical Gardens and the historic 400-acre Queen’s Park Savannah.

Shopping and Dining

There is no shortage of places to shop for those determined to make some purchases - several malls can be found along the likes of Frederick Street and Henry Street. The many malls house a variety of stores, restaurants and recreation options to suit all tastes. An array of international cuisine is on offer including Creole, East Indian, Chinese and Italian. Those seeking hedonism Port of Spain-style head to St James on the western edge of the city, where nightlife sampling a range of cultures is just waiting to be discovered.
