The internet access that was noted in the booking confirmation was not provided. We mentioned it the reception man gave us a password which did not work and he then refereed us to the paid internet service at a very high cost. Floor tiles broken in bathroom, not just one but about 14 bad enough to cut bare feet. How this hotel gets a 3 star rating is beyond us. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable.

I stayed one nightin the Hotel Europe, on the way from Toulouse to Pézenas. The hotel is a converted ancient building and the web photos do not do the hotel justice, it looks even nicer in the courtyard/check-in than expected. The room I had was very large for one person, with a canopy bed. There was an old desk and a Seidel & Naumann 1917 Erika German typewriter to set off the atmosphere of the original brick and timber walls. The separate bathroom was spacious. At check-in the Patron and his wife (?) were friendly and helpful. Situated in a narrow street near the centre of the medieval town, I was able to sit outside and enjoy a cooling beer in peace and quiet . Then being some exhausted, I decided to eat there and soon settled into a generous picher of nice red wine. The food was average, but this was reflected in the price. Next morning, after a good breakfast and as many freshly espressed coffees as I needed, I was on my way, relaxed and content. In my job, I have stayed in hotels all over the world, from the worst in London and Paris, to the best. This one is among the better hotels I have stayed at. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt good, so if you need to stay in Castres or nearby, look no further than this hotel, which, in its ancient building, deserves a more enterprising name.

The hotel was in a good position and was good value for money.
