When Portela Airport first opened in 1942, it only offered four 1,000-meter-long runways. Immediate success warranted immediate expansion, and Portela quickly grew to accommodate the booming tourism industry. Its distinction as one of the largest airports in Southern Europe made it popular during World War II; its location on neutral territory greatly affected both Axis and Allied forces. Spies from both camps heavily monitored the terminals, as they commonly were used to transport civilians—legally and illegally. When the war finally ended, Portela continued its reign as a dominant hub of transportation.
