Peering out over the blue waters of the English Channel from Calais, one can just make out the famous white cliffs of Dover just 20 miles away. Known primarily as France’s closest point to England, Calais has long been an important transportation hub, first with ferries and now with the Chunnel, the Channel Tunnel that can have you in Jolly Old England in minutes. So where to stay when in Calais?
HotelsOne.com would love to answer that question, with many hotel rooms listed and many ways to search through them, making it easy, quick and fun to find your perfect Calais hotel. You can search by location. What hotels are close to the Calais Frethun? What hotels are close to the port? Or the Ostend-Bruges Airport?
HotelsOne.com also allows you to search for hotel rooms in order of their popularity, in order of their star rating and even by the size and age of the group you are traveling with, so you can make your Calais reservations with confidence. Hotel photos, area maps and complete lists of amenities make it easy to know exactly what to expect long before you ever arrive in the city.
Calais was virtually bombed to the ground during World War II, so very few buildings pre-date the 1940s, making most hotels in Calais modern as well. One shining exception is the Calais landmark, the magnificent Flemish renaissance Hotel de Ville (Town Hall). The beautiful building stands next to a Big Ben-like clock tower and Rodin’s dramatic sculpture, Les Bourgeois de Calais (The Burghers of Calais), which depicts a tale of sacrifice which occurred in 1347 during the Hundred Years’ War with England.
Many hotel rooms in Calais have views of this lovely sight. Another survivor of the bombings is the 16th Century Citadel and Fort Nieulay, both located on the outskirts of the city. Though not many hotel rooms give easy access to these historical sites, many hotels rent cars and bicycles, making it easy to see them, along with the surrounding countryside. Other places of historical interest to be found on the outskirts of town and easily accessible from many hotel rooms include Fort Risban and many ancient dikes and canals. You’ll find that we list hotels in the Calais Fréthun District, the Centre Ville District, the Gare District and the Port District.
Just outside of Calais lie many natural wonders as well, which are also convenient to many hotel rooms. Be sure to stroll to the Côte d'Opale, Calais’s answer to Dover’s white cliffs and actually part of the same geological formation. Back in town, you can find hotels close to a small park that once was the German military headquarters and is now a war museum. HotelsOne.com can also find you Calais hotels close to the ferry, close to the Eurostar Station and close to the airport.
