With breathtaking natural scenery and superb ski facilities, Whistler is the winter wonderland of Canada and attracts hordes of visitors every year. There are also more than 200 shops and 90 restaurants in the town, providing ample opportunities to enjoy other forms of entertainment.

Skiing

The Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is the largest in North America and is centered around the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. One of its most prominent features is the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which ferries skiers and snowboarders between the two mountain peaks. It is the highest and longest unsupported cable car in the world.

The main skiing area begins about a third of the way up the mountain; higher up are the Whistler alpine regions and the entrance to Blackcomb Glacier. Altogether there are four restaurants on Whistler Mountain, in addition to a skiing school for children.

Other Attractions

Even non-skiers can find numerous attractions to enjoy in Whistler. For an indoor cultural activity, the First Nation’s Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre showcases exhibits, educational events and workshops. Other options include the museums and galleries in town, such as the Whistler Village Art Gallery and the Whistler Museum.

Outside the skiing season, there are still plenty of fun things to do outdoors. Cycling enthusiasts can rent a bike and follow the mountain trails which range from calm lakeside routes to adrenaline-pumping downhill paths. Hiking is another popular pursuit, as are the many water-based activities on offer – canoeing, white water rafting, fishing and more.

For a more relaxed experience, sightseers can take a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer Sea to Sky Climb train, which winds its way around Whistler through valleys, canyons and mountains. Apart from the gorgeous scenery, travelers are treated to a champagne breakfast as well as high tea in the afternoon.

Eat and Drink

As one would expect in a resort town, the dining and drinking venues in Whistler are fantastic. Beer lovers should stop by the Whistler Brewing Company to take the tour which includes the chance to sample four of the brewery’s beers. Other places where cheap drinks can be found are FireRock Lounge, Amsterdam Café and El Furniture Warehouse.

For food, Dusty’s Bar & BBQ, located at the base of the Creekside Gondola, serves delicious barbecue dishes; they also make an excellent Caesar, Canada’s official cocktail, and there is often live music playing here. Alternatively, locally inspired cuisine paired with an impressive wine list and specialty cocktails can be found at the Alta Bistro. Another local favorite is Teppan Village, Whistler’s only authentic Japanese steakhouse where chefs prepare meals at the table in a spectacular theatrical performance.
