Beaches

One of the most popular beaches in Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay, is located in Southampton. The sand here has a delicate pink hue and there is an impressive network of sea caves and tunnels to explore. Another option is Church Bay, considered by locals to be the best snorkeling destination in Bermuda.

Probably the most distinctive landmark in Southampton is the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. First used in 1846, this lighthouse is one of the oldest cast-iron structures in the world. The 185-step climb to the observation deck is well worth the breathtaking views. Also on the premises is a charming tea room serving beverages and light bites.

Golfers are spoiled for choice in Southampton, which boasts venues like the Turtle Hill Golf Club, the Port Royal Golf Course and the Bermuda Golf Academy and Driving Range. Turtle Hill is especially is especially beautiful, and has won Golf Digest’s award for Best Places to Play Golf.

Those interested in history should check out the Whale Bay Battery fortifications. The name of this site originates from the era when the whaling industry was thriving – whalers would stop off in Bermuda to clean their catch or launch their boats. Today it is a popular whale-watching spot.

Aside from having many attractions of its own to entice tourists, Southampton is conveniently placed for easy access to other places in Bermuda. For example, the capital city, Hamilton, is nearby, and is full of museums, cinemas, shops, bars, hotels and restaurants – not to mention the markets, gardens, beaches and plazas. While here, visitors should take a look at the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, an exquisite piece of architecture.

The route of the former Bermuda Railway is now a lovely walking trail beginning at the town of St George’s and extending towards Somerset Village. Walkers can enjoy spectacular views of the coast along the way.
