But underneath the grand political symbols is a vibrant city thrumming with energy and young life. It’s also a family-friendly destination, with a welcoming vibe and an upbeat attitude. Introducing DC One of the best areas for newcomers to Washington DC is Dupont Circle, a cosmopolitan neighborhood where visitors can find some of the city’s finest museums, historic homes, foreign embassies, ethnic restaurants, bookstores, art galleries and more. High-rise apartment buildings mingle with row houses, and there is an abundance of green space perfect for taking in the fresh air. Some of the excellent restaurants to check out include Domi, the French Bistrot du Coin and Firefly. The Phillips Collection on 21st Street Northwest, a modern art gallery that opened in 1921, houses works by Degas, Cezanne, van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. It’s also possible to tour Woodrow Wilson House – President Wilson’s Georgian revival home on Embassy Row. The Must-Sees No trip to Washington DC is complete without a visit to the White House, perhaps America’s most iconic building. The approach from the National Mall is a sight to behold, and visitors can get up close and personal with a tour of the interior. If visiting during the winter, guests will get a glimpse of the brilliantly lit National Christmas Tree. Other attractions near White House include the National Aquarium, Lafayette Square and the Corcoran Gallery. Theatre and history lovers alike have to check out the Ford’s Theatre campus, the site of US President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on 14 April 1865. This significant venue incorporates a museum to the legendary American leader; the Center for Education and Leadership and Peterson’s House, plus it still operates as a fully functioning theatre. Nightlife There’s a big youth population in Washington, and the dining and clubbing scene is flourishing – visitors just need to know the right places to visit! Some of the most popular nightclubs include the 9:30 Club and Lux Lounge, while there are smaller pubs that cater to a more relaxed crowd - Union Pub and Fado Irish Pub are two favorites among locals. Beer aficionados can make the trip to the Capitol City Brewing Company and the Old Dominion Brewhouse to sample some choice ale. Fun for the Whole Family Families can enjoy the 400 species of animals in the National Zoo, which is just one on a long list of exciting attractions this metropolis has to offer. The National Air & Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History are extremely popular places to pass time in the capital.
