This is an ideal destination for a relaxing vacation, with plenty to offer by way of leisure facilities. Get Outdoors Many of the visitors to Bretton Woods come for the skiing. Both downhill and cross-country skiing are available in the Rosebrook Mountains at the Bretton Woods Mountain Resort. With about 100 ski runs, this is the largest downhill skiing resort in New Hampshire. In the summer, the Mount Washington Hotel and Resort opens its two stunning golf courses – the nine-hole Mount Pleasant Course and the 18-hole Mount Washington Course, one of the most scenic golf courses in the country. Children can play for free on the Mount Pleasant Course; tennis, horse riding and other activities are also on offer at this resort. Another fantastic option for family fun is the Canopy Tour, a zip-lining adventure at 1,000 feet of elevation over treetops and beautiful valleys. This attraction is open in all seasons. Historical Significance Bretton Woods has been a resort destination for decades and there are some historically significant sites in the area. The Mount Washington Hotel is more than 100 years old and its Mount Washington Course was initially designed by David Ross in 1915. In nearby Thompson and Meserve’s Purchase are the tracks of the Cog Railway, which opened in 1869 and was the first railroad in the world to take passengers up a mountain. The United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference was held in Bretton Woods in 1944. This led to the establishment of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in 1945, as well as the Bretton Woods system of financial management. Dining As one would expect in a resort area, there are some excellent dining options in Bretton Woods. Fabyan’s Station Restaurant, formerly a train stop for those traveling to Crawford Notch, is a casual family-friendly restaurant serving house-smoked sandwiches, soups, salads and more. It is open throughout the year. Another popular venue is The Grille, located in the Bretton Woods Nordic Center/Golf Clubhouse. This restaurant has full bar service, plus outdoor seating in the summer with breathtaking views of the Presidential Mountain Range. The menu features traditional American fare and there are take-out meals for those on the run. A more upscale option is Latitude 44 Restaurant. To reach it, travelers take the Bethlehem Express High-Speed Quad that affords expansive views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range from the summit of the largest ski area.
