Cuisine is just as varied and beloved in New York. Your delicious findings will change from borough to borough, of which there are five. The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island each has its own distinct flair; even the individual neighborhoods within the boroughs proudly display identities all their own. Little Italy and NoLita, on the Lower East Side, are parts of the city especially known for their shopping and dining opportunities. As the area becomes more gentrified, the choices become more upscale. However, there are still plenty of casual, family-run establishments to discover throughout the boroughs. At the edge of Little Italy is Chinatown; Astoria, in Queens, is home to a thriving multi-ethnic community that offers everything from German beer gardens to Greek taverns. Coney Island is the best place to try an original Nathan's Famous hot dog, and Harlem is filled with old-school jazz clubs and great Latin eats. These ethnic enclaves remind us of New York's rich history, as do the most famous symbols of American immigration: Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
New York's diverse locals and tourists (the city attracts more than 48 million visitors annually) seem to constantly spill out of subway cars and sidewalk cafes, their individual rhythms adding layers to the city's energetic pace. New York City is very pedestrian-friendly, its neighborhoods linked by a complex yet easy-to-navigate public transportation system. The city is actually quite small; however, that fact is quickly forgotten as there are so many things to see and do. You may find yourself wondering how so much has been packed into such a compact space and also why anyone would ever want to leave this amazing city.
