Dubai Hotels

Yes, Dubai is a portal into the Middle East; however, it also serves as an introduction to a manmade fantasy world, where everything is larger-than-life and luxurious. This is where you will find the only seven-star hotel in the world, clusters of strategically placed manmade islands, underwater hotels and restaurants, awe-inspiring retail spaces, and the tallest tower ever built. Whatever can be jewel-incrusted or gold-plated, is. There is simply no such thing as too glamorous or over-the-top in Dubai.

The Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, measures a whopping 2684 feet tall. Its recent completion marks an historical moment for the Middle East: This is the first time that the world's tallest structure has been located in this part of the world since the Great Pyramid of Giza was surpassed in 1311. Other incredible feats of human ingenuity are the city's Palm Jumeirah (a palm-shaped island whose creation essentially doubled the length of Dubai's coastline) and The World a manmade archipelago of over 300 islands that together form a miniature map of the world. Dubai is also home to the world's largest indoor ski resort, the dazzling Gold Souk market, and an estimated 450 hotels. (First-timers should know that since it is run under strict Muslim law, Dubai is only able to serve alcohol at the restaurants, bars and clubs within its hotels.)

The aforementioned Burj Al Arab is not only one of the most opulent and famous hotels in the world; it is also one of Dubai's premiere landmarks. The building rises 1050 feet into the air, reaching just 40 feet below the Rose Tower (the world's tallest hotel, also located in Dubai.) It was constructed to resemble the sail of a ship, as if to magically guide the hotel's manmade island into the sea. Rates there start at $1000 a night, but don't worry there are plenty of other hotels in Dubai. In fact, its hospitality is one of the city's biggest draws. Another is its incredible array of shopping opportunities.

Be sure to check out the City Centre Mall in Dubai, home to 1200 stores (more than any other mall in the world) as well as an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink and an aquarium. Avid shoppers would also do well to time their trip to coincide with the Dubai Shopping Festival. Visit Dubai during this time or Ramadan, and you will witness traditional dance performances, songs and other customs put on by the local Emiratis.

Today, it is difficult to picture Dubai as it once was: a sleepy fishing village quietly nestled along the Gulf. Today, the city has re-built to such an extent that the underlying culture and history are easily lost. Dig a little deeper, however, and you will find meaning beneath the glitz and shine: Vast desert landscapes, the ancient relics of Jordan, and the fascinating artifacts of Petra can be just as eye-catching as the water parks, shopping malls, and other shrines to excess in Dubai.  Close
