If you’re wondering what gives Macao its international flavor, that would because this tiny country, now a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (like Hong Kong), Macao was the first and last European colony in China. From the 16th Century until 1999, Macao was Portuguese, and this is reflected in many Macao landmarks and many Macao hotels. Speaking of hotels, if this is your first visit (or your hundredth) and you’re not sure about what hotel at which to make your Macao reservations, our HotelsOne website can be a great help. Whether your ideal hotel in Macao is on the peninsula or on the island, HotelsOne provides hotel photos, interactive maps powered by Google and complete lists of hotel amenities, so you can choose your hotel with confidence.

Let’s start with hotels in Macao’s peninsula, the north side of the country, which borders China itself. From a distance, the Macao skyline is an impressive wall of gleaming skyscrapers thrusting into the sky. But look closer. A Macao hotel on the peninsula can also put you in touch with the city’s Portuguese past if the hotel is near the city’s old center. Hotels here can give you access to St. Augustine's Square, where you’ll find St Augustine's Church, Dom Pedro V Theatre, St Joseph's Seminary and many other remnants of Portuguese life. Or how about a hotel near the 16th Century St. Lawrence's Church, where Portuguese sailors would gather to pray for the safe return of their loved ones. A Macao Peninsula sight with Chinese roots is the Taoist A-Ma Temple, the most famous Chinese temple in Macau, which predates the Portuguese.

The rest of Macao is an island which used to be two islands (Taipa and Coloane) until landfill combined the islands. A hotel to the south end, on the former island of Coloane, reveals the section of Macao that is less developed. Attractions accessible to island hotels include several museums and many casinos, like the Crown Macau, the Macau Jockey Club and the Casino Taipa. HotelsOne lists hotels on the island as well as the peninsula.
